Reinstating the frontal lobes? Having more time to think improves implicit perceptual categorization: a comment on Filoteo, Lauritzen, and Maddox (2010).

چکیده
In our experiment, as in that of Filoteo et al. (2010), participants learned a two-category structure in which the stimuli were straight lines that varied on three stimulus dimensions (3D): length, orientation (rotation) and screen position (from left to right on the horizontal axis). Two of these dimensions were relevant to the category decision (length and orientation) and the third (screen position) was not. The category boundary was placed so that information from the length and orientation dimensions had to be integrated to make correct categorization decisions (see Figure S1). We thank Todd Maddox for providing the stimuli files.

Removing the frontal lobes: the effects of engaging executive functions on perceptual category learning.
The present study examined the impact of engaging frontal-mediated working memory processes on implicit and explicit category learning. Two stimulus dimensions were relevant to categorization, but in some conditions, a third, irrelevant dimension was also presented. Results indicated that in both implicit and explicit conditions, the inclusion of the irrelevant dimension impaired performance by...
متن کاملStriatal contributions to category learning: quantitative modeling of simple linear and complex nonlinear rule learning in patients with Parkinson's disease.
The contribution of the striatum to category learning was examined by having patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and matched controls solve categorization problems in which the optimal rule was linear or nonlinear using the perceptual categorization task. Traditional accuracy-based analyses, as well as quantitative model-based analyses were performed. Unlike accuracy-based analyses, the mode...
متن کاملNeuropsychology of Perceptual Category Learning 1 The Neuropsychology of Perceptual Category Learning
There is widespread agreement that multiple qualitatively different category learning systems mediate the learning of different category structures. Two systems that have received support are (1) a frontal-based explicit system that uses logical reasoning, depends on working memory and executive attention, and is mediated primarily by the anterior cingulate, the prefrontal cortex, and the assoc...
متن کاملCategory Learning in Parkinson's Disease
An understanding of the early cognitive deficits in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) could provide better insight into the nature of the disease as well as its future course. One area of study that holds considerable promise is the study of category learning. Much research has examined the neurobiological basis of category learning and it is now well-established that multiple cognitive an...
متن کاملQuantitative modeling of category learning in amnesic patients.
Category rule learning was examined in two amnesic patients using the perceptual categorization task (e.g., Ashby & Gott, 1988; Filoteo & Maddox, 1999). Traditional accuracy-based analyses as well as quantitative model-based analyses were performed. Unlike accuracy-based analyses, the model-based approach allowed us to examine both categorization rule learning and variability in the trial-by-tr...
